What is Cooperative Care?

Cooperative Care is an area of dog training that teaches animals to be active and willing participants in their own care. Our dogs will have to experience many types of care in their lifetimes such as hair cuts, nail clipping and veterinary examinations. Some dogs can find these experiences distressing. Through cooperative care training, we can empower our dogs by giving them choice and control during these procedures so that they feel more confident and comfortable when these procedures need to happen in a grooming or veterinary context.

Would this be useful for my dog?

Cooperative Care training is for every dog. It is ideal for us to prepare puppies, who haven't yet experienced the vet or groomers, for what those experiences will be like. It is also a valuable tool for dogs that have already had those experiences and may feel negatively towards vet and grooming procedures.

Day-to-day benefits

This type of training is not limited to vet and grooming procedures; some dogs struggle with day-to-day handling such as having a bath, putting on their harness or putting on a jacket. Cooperative Care training helps dogs in every area of their life to feel more comfortable around people and novel items.
